I went to the King's School, Canterbury and then read English at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. After graduating with a 2:1 I taught for a year at a prep. school before taking a PGCE at London University for which I was awarded a Distinction. I taught English full time for 17 years at Repton where I was Head of English and Director of Drama and for 7 years as Head of English at Harrow. I then taught for ten years at Queen's College, Harley Street where I directed Sixth Form plays and was for a while Head of English. In my spare time I am writing a guide to correct spelling, punctuation and grammar - for adults as well as children!

Over the years I have discovered that successful teaching springs from listening to students and finding out what they know rather than attempting to cram them with information. I aim to help them recognise the skills and original ideas they already possess and to give them the confidence to build on these and then tackle new challenges. I also try to make sure students have as clear an idea as possible of what exactly the exam they are facing will demand of them. I have particular expertise in preparing students for interviews, having for several years conducted practice interviews at Westminster Cathedral Choir School and more recently online. My aim is to make students aware of the sorts of questions they are likely to be asked, to consider the attributes they have which will enable them to contribute to the wider life of a senior school, and to have confidence in their own ideas and opinions.
