Biography

As the eldest of 5 children, I have always been encouraged to strive for academic and personal excellence. As a child growing up in Toronto, Canada, I was obsessed by reading literature, creative writing and playing the violin. My family鈥檚 move to a little village in Greece at the age of 15 was a life-changing and life-enhancing experience. I returned to the big city to complete my university education and was lured back to sunny life in Greece where I worked as an EFL teacher as well as setting up my own small language school in my village. After meeting my husband, a fellow EFL teacher, we moved back to his home-town, London, and I started teaching in a challenging inner-city school. As my confidence and expertise grew, I gained promotion quickly and was able to lead my faculty in creative and forward- thinking initiatives which were a model for the rest of the school. I now live and work as an English Teacher in the small city of St Albans with my husband and two wonderful daughters.

I love being able to learn about my students' individual abilities and challenge them to improve. It is a real joy being able to develop a personal relationship with them which enables me to motivate them in their work.

Approach to Tutoring

The study of language and literature requires one to be a student of history, culture, philosophy, logic and a lover of the imagination. My greatest pleasure as a tutor is to spark the minds of young people and help them deepen their knowledge and appreciation of the beauty of the English and French languages.

I am very experienced in dealing with a wide range of abilities and I enjoy encouraging students to grow in confidence with small steps of improvement in English to show students that they can actually succeed. I provide specific guidance about examination requirements, how to read and understand a question as well as exemplar answers to guide the student which allows the student to develop their examination technique.

My lessons are fast-paced and interactive, with much discussion, use of audio, video and visuals and I enjoy combining text study with a variety of formal analytical tasks, formal writing tasks and creative writing.

I enjoy getting to know my students and weaving their personal interests into my lessons so as to engage them. Humour and frequent praise are indispensable tools as well as clearly articulated learning outcomes and high expectations. My lessons often use a list of 'success criteria', 'model answers' and self and teacher evaluation of strengths and weaknesses. I encourage reflection and independent thought through targeted questioning and scaffolding of the learning so as to allow my students to reach their 'eureka' moment (which is always very exciting!).

When not tutoring

I have two wonderful little girls who take up most of my time as we are home educating. In addition, I love gardening (I have an allotment), nature walks, healthy cooking and baking for my family. I am also interested in natural health and herbalism.
