I’ve been teaching maths for a long time now, but it didn’t start in a classroom or with a title. While it’s fair to say I began tutoring with a small handful of students when I was still doing my A levels, I really began teaching properly after university. Back then I was in my early twenties, cycling from student to student on a rusty bike. On hot days I would arrive sweating, on rainy days completely drenched. I got away with it thanks to the warmth and patience of the families I worked with, who were generous enough to see past the rough edges and recognise the effort behind it.
What emerged from those early years was something I hadn’t fully realised about myself. Maths has a logic to it, an order and a purpose. My strength is being able to see maths the way a student sees it, understand where it stops making sense for them, and then bridge that gap so it finally clicks.
There’s a particular sound a student makes when that happens. It’s a quiet “Ooooooh”. That moment of understanding is what I’m always working towards, because once a student starts to see the structure behind the subject, progress accelerates very quickly.
I joined ҺƵ in 2012, and not long after that I also took on a role in a London secondary school where the head quickly recognised the impact I was having and asked me to step into a leadership position. I went on to recruit and train a team of 45 tutors with a clear brief: raise attainment across the school, particularly at GCSE. Rather than chasing quick fixes, we focused on clarity, structure and strong teaching habits. Over time the results followed, and we went on to achieve the strongest outcomes in the school’s history.
I’ve since been approached to take on similar leadership roles elsewhere, but I chose to stay focused on one-to-one teaching. That’s where I feel most effective. Over the years I’ve worked with hundreds of students, from last-minute exam support through to families where I’ve taught every sibling from 11+ right through to A level. I enjoy the direct connection with students, seeing the moment something clicks, and helping them build real confidence in their own thinking.
When I teach, I really have two goals:
1 - Bring out the very best in each student
2 - Make the process enjoyable enough that they actually look forward to learning
Every student is different, but the aim is always the same: to help them feel capable, understood and quietly proud of what they can achieve.
